August Deaths Reported in Taiwan. Not Good. 16,830 deaths in Aug , 2017-2021 avg was 14,403 with out 300 COVID deaths as another wave was winding down (I got a nasty case as the wave began early June)
Too much noise in monthly data so I want to look at the macro data this time. Covid and Vaccination started about the same time in Taiwan, May 2021, so lets look at the cumulative deaths May 2021-August 2024
Total Deaths
672,444 deaths from May 2021-Aug 2024
COVID DEATHS-<25,000
Same period of time pre-COVID (40 months)
578,510 deaths from May 2017-Aug 2020
Total Increase in Deaths was 93,934 (increase of 16.2%)
Note some of that may be due to aging population, but certainly not all (not even close)
Non-Covid Deaths >68,934
Ps-They dont keep track of COVID deaths now. Try googling it. Worldometer will show 19,005 but thats of April 13, 2023 when they stopped updating it. Taiwan stopped reporting daily deaths and started with weekly deaths. In September it appears the cdc here has stopped reporting even that. My best estimate based in weekly updates through August is 24k and change, so call it under 25k
As for whats up with all the deaths. I wont bother guessing. Maybe undiagnosed COVID, long COVID, vaccines, aging population, some combination of all that. But its not talked about. Like its not happening. Weird.
One would have expected the pull forward effect to bring deaths down but 2024 is tracking close to 2022-2023 in deaths to date (slight decline from 2023).
Anyways, thats all
Pete,
My nephew arrives in Taiwan Sunday for an extended work stay. Any suggestions, do's/don't I can pass on to him?
